Am I allowed to do my driver's test in a rental car?

Asked a year ago

I don't have my own car, but I want to get my driver's test done as soon as possible. Can I do it in a rental?

Most rental car agencies do not allow learner drivers or student drivers to rent their vehicles out at all. Rental car companies do not rent their vehicles to anyone without a valid drivers license. Some jurisdictions like New York have exceptions to this rule. If however, you have an instructor or family member who can legally rent a vehicle with an active drivers license, some jurisdictions such as New York, allow the use of rental cars.

Most rental car agencies don't allow students to rent their vehicles due to insurance policy and legal policy. An adult or fully licensed driver can rent a vehicle and allow you to use it in the test, some agencies allow this and so long as insurance policy covers the student driver or third party then its acceptable. You can in fact rent a car in some jurisdictions for a learners driving test, but it all depends on the rental car company policy and the license holder.

Most driving schools will allow you to rent out the test vehicles for you to complete the driving test. Find out what the cost is and how long the rental is for when you book your driver's test. Traditional car rentals will only rent out cars to customers who have held a driver's license for longer than 6 months.

There is a limit to the way that insurance companies will handle learner drivers, as they see inexperienced drivers as a greater risk, which means higher premium. Provided the documentation is in order, you have an insurance company that carries you and you have the necessary paperwork, you can do the test in a rental car if needed. It does all depend on the jurisdiction, as some DMV locations don't allow rentals.
