If you’ve recently moved to Pennsylvania, one of the first things you’ll need to do is obtain a Pennsylvania driver’s license. At Driven2Drive Driving School, we understand that getting your driver’s license can be a stressful experience, which is why we offer driver education and license testing services to help you get on the road quickly and safely.
Getting Your PA Driver’s License: Step-by-Step
1. Gather Required Documents
Before you can apply for a driver’s license at the PennDOT DMV, you’ll need to gather the required documents. The documents you’ll need will vary depending on your situation, but some common documents include:
- A valid out-of-state driver’s license or ID card
- Proof of your identity, such as a passport or birth certificate
- Proof of your social security number, such as a social security card or W-2 form
- Proof of residency, such as a utility bill or lease agreement
Be sure to check the PennDOT website for a complete list of required documents based on your specific situation.
2. Schedule Your Knowledge Test
Once you have your required documents, the next step is to schedule your knowledge test at the PennDOT DMV. The knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam that tests your understanding of Pennsylvania’s driving laws and regulations. You can schedule your knowledge test appointment online through the PennDOT website. Be sure to bring your required documents with you to your appointment.
3. Take the Knowledge Test
On the day of your knowledge test, arrive at the PennDOT DMV a few minutes early to check in. You’ll need to present your required documents, pay the required fee, and take the knowledge test. The test consists of 18 multiple-choice questions, and you’ll need to answer at least 15 questions correctly to pass. After you pass the knowledge test, you’ll receive a learner’s permit. Once you have your permit, you may begin taking driving lessons. Driven2Drive offers driving lessons throughout PA with convenient and flexible packages to suit your needs.
4. Select the Location and Schedule Your Road Test
Once you’ve held your learner’s permit for the required amount of time and have practiced driving, the next step is to schedule your road test at one of Driven2Drive’s locations. The Road Test at D2D is identical to the road test at PennDOT. The road test is a driving test that evaluates your ability to safely operate a vehicle.
You can schedule your road test appointment online through the Driven2Drive website. Be sure to bring your learner’s permit and required documents with you to your appointment.
5. Take the Penndot Road Test
On the day of your road test, arrive at the Driven2Drive location a few minutes early to check-in. You’ll need to present your required documents and take the PennDOT road test. Fees are paid upon scheduling. If the student is under 18 they need to be accompanied to the test by a parent or guardian, as two forms will be required for minors to take the PA road test. The road test will evaluate your driving skills in a variety of situations, such as changing lanes, turning, and parallel parking. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can safely operate a vehicle in different scenarios to pass the test.
6. Receive Your PA Driver’s License
If you pass the Road Test, congratulations! We will stamp your permit and that will immediately become your temporary driver’s license. PennDOT will then issue a camera card that will come in the mail in about two weeks. Once you receive the camera card you can go to any photo licensing center to take your photo and obtain the plastic PA Driver’s License.
