The Diverse Driving Culture in the US
Many people assume that culture is comprised of arts, music, theater, etc. Few realize that there are elements of culture in other areas of our society. In fact, even driving has its own culture. The driving culture in the US is quite diverse. Not only do different states have slightly different laws, but their enforcement can be different, as well.
It is not uncommon, even here in the State of Pennsylvania, to see that certain townships are a lot more particular about their Stop Signs. In fact, in Havertown, PA, almost every Stop Sign has an additional sign attached to it stating that “A complete Stop is free & an incomplete one costs between $25 to $100.” Driving through the State of Virginia, many know from experience that they are particular about enforcing their speed limit. These are just some examples that ultimately create driving culture in the US. The driving culture can vary from State to State & City to City. The fact that the majority of the vehicles operated in the US are with automatic transmission is yet another component that creates our existing driving culture.
Driver’s License Requirements Across Different States
Age Requirements for Driver’s Licenses
Many may not realize that even the licensure process & requirements are different from State to State. In South Carolina, someone who is 14.5 years old can be eligible to take their written test & be admissible for the practical Road Test by the time they are 15 years old. In the State of Pennsylvania, on the other hand, one has to be 16 years old to be eligible to sit for their written exam.
Variations in Written and Road Tests
There is, perhaps, one unfortunate element in the licensing process, in my opinion. The written exam in the State of Pennsylvania may be too easily accessible. Many of the students we’ve asked were able to complete the entire exam in under 10 minutes. The Road Test exam in terms of the skills being tested and the duration of the exam can also be completed within 15-20 minutes. Indeed, it should not be about the duration of the exams. Rather, it should be about actually testing the skillset.
The Cost of Obtaining a Driver’s License
One can’t fail to notice that the overall cost of entry to acquire a driver’s license in the State of Pennsylvania can be summed to a grand total of 30 minutes & some $40 or so for the cost of acquiring the permit. Once we recognize & put these ideas into the context that the ‘cost of entry’ is relatively low in acquiring one’s driver’s license & yet the responsibility associated with driving is quite immense (physical, financial, etc.), it seems uneven.
The Importance of Driver’s Education
Investing time & money into driver education would seem like a sound choice. Not only does it ensure that new drivers are well-prepared, but it also promotes safe driving practices that can save lives and reduce accidents. Comprehensive driver’s education covers more than just the basics of operating a vehicle. It includes lessons on defensive driving, understanding road signs, and the rules of the road, all of which contribute to a more well-rounded and responsible driver.
